where or if you find a song
don't wait too long
to underestimate what may go wrong
sudden jump back away from the wheel
another narrow escape, that rarely reveal
while firmly hanging on, like an elephant ear
so whatever ran over me
cut the last tie to reality
so re-calculate the ways we'll need to go
stoop to sneak feign breaking a knee
telling it like I see, but barely all I know
elephant ear
so how to tolerate?
is it only time, or is it fate?
so hard to deviate
is it love, or is this hate?
over an elephant ear

So you want to build a dove-tail drawer
where you can hide some stuff and then you go buy more
but yer having questions and feeling fears
you've come to the right guy cuz I been making em for years
the dove-tail joint it is an ancient technology
that pre-dates the nail, the screw and scientology
it holds itself if the fit is true
without a fastener and it don't rely on glue
it's a mark of quality and shows that time was spent
it's detailed considered and maybe heaven sent
and you know I could go on but this floor is laid
instead I'll tell you how dove-tail drawers are made
you start will a slice of a tree as a plank
find one at the store and bring some money from the bank
is it straight? does it cup? are there knots? is it split?
are the things you should consider when yer lookin at it
the thickness you want is four quarters or less
and it'll save you time if it's already dressed
while the width is random the length is set
you may need a truck for movin it
the fun begins when you get back to the shop
and there's no better time so there's no need to stop
you cut the rough pieces slightly over length
yer gonna use a chop saw and lotsa arm strength
cuz the jointer's next it makes one face flat
then you run it on edge perpendicular to that
the planer thins it down by the sixteenth
five eights is finished thick if you know what I mean
and now you rip four pieces to the final height
one front, one back and two sides is right
you sand and trim to the final size
minus any allowance based on the type of slides
slowly approaching the dove-tail jig
if you can figure this out you'll be onto something big
but the teeth and math is way over yer head
you better sit on down with the manual instead
and I'll wait
So the sides get tails the front and back get pins
and three quarters in is where the router begins
you use a test piece first so you get the right fit
when yer ready put on yer cans and commit
the sides go first and then you flip the teeth
make sure the piece stays tight up underneath
then its the front and back you re-assess the fit
you check the pride or lack and have fun with it
contain the dust protect your ears and eyes
if needed fine adjust it may take multiple tries
keep pieces organized and you won't get confused
don't scream and yell stay humbly amused
now yer coming up on assembly
certain details you ought to consider g
yer best to round the sides along the top
dado for the bottom and check the ply you got
now are there clips and holes? handles knobs and fronts?
what is the drawer to hold? what is the height you want?
then you bang it together and you sand it down
you seal it up so it maintains the brown
slide in the bottom staple at the back
look it all over and fill any crack
you get the drawer in place and you try it out
while growing confidence where there was only doubt
now you see so clear just what you've begun
you head back to the store so you can make another one
cuz you got more stuff and nowhere to put it
a few more drawers wouldn't hurt now would it?
maybe you can sell drawers make some cash
maybe you can grow em just like a moustache
maybe start a business and get this down
maybe hand drawers out all over town
now I've gone too far you need to reel me in
cuz this is just a song to help you begin
these are just rhymes and not much more
then instructions on how to build a dove-tail drawer

King Dooker Peterborough, Ontario
King Dooker is the ongoing internal soundtrack and reflections on people I know, experiences I've had, and melody lines that
bubble up in dreams or become entangled in my subconscious by means of tiny hooks made of sound. Sticky stuff, gathered from the corner. Shouldn't have touched it.
Ate it.
Hear and there.
Dig.
